Trek to Heavenly Kalsubai: 5 things to know

Conquering the highest peak of Maharashtra is indeed a fantastic experience. Situated in the Western Ghats, Kalsubai is one of the most amazing treks and it is visited by avid trekkers throughout the year. Kalsubai Peak, located in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India, is the highest peak in the state and is a popular destination for trekking and hiking. The trek to the peak is considered to be challenging, but also very rewarding as it offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.


Basic Information

Kalsubai is the highest peak of Maharashtra which is situated at an elevation of 1646 meters that is about 5400 ft. It is a very popular trek in Sahyadri Region. The temple at the summit of the peak draws people from nearby villages throughout the year. They come to take blessings from Kalsubai Devi.  It is believed that a young village girl named Kalsubai lived in the mountains. During that time she cured villagers and animals and also helped in village activities. One day she left for the summit and never returned. So in her memory, a small temple was built at her home on the mountainside and the main Kalsubai temple was built on the peak.

One can easily reach Kalsubai from Mumbai and Pune. Basepoint to start the trek is Bari village. This village is about 80 km from Karjat Station and is well-connected to roads. If traveling by train one needs to get down at Karjat and then reach the base village, the nearest airport is Mumbai Airport.

Kalsubai Peak

The trail to the peak is well-defined and easy to follow. It is a mix of rocky and muddy terrain, and the ascent can be steep at times. If you’re a beginner, then the trek takes about 5-6 hours to reach the summit, and about 3-4 hours to descend.

The first trial passes through different extensive fields and farming lands to reach the main entrance gate of the Kalsubai. The second trail mainly consists of some broken stairs which pass through the jungle. The final trial consists of the 4-5 steep ladders which ultimately lead you to the summit where Kalsubai temple is located.

One of the best things about this trek is the views. As higher you go the more scenic views you’ll get. It truly feels like you are in heaven if the weather is in your favor. As soon as you reach the final ladder, you can see the bed of clouds as you yourself have landed in heaven.

The trekking difficulty lies between easy to medium range. You can easily complete this trek if you have prior experience.

After reaching the top there is a temple of Kalsubai. The breeze you feel at the top is worth it. The astonishing feeling of conquering the highest peak of Maharashtra cannot be described in words

The views throughout the Kalsubai trek are no less than any attraction but one must visit the temple at the top. If you’re not able to reach the top there is a small temple at the start of the trek try not to miss that.

Important Points

  1. Make sure to carry a big water bottle as this trek will dry you up entirely

2. Washroom facilities are only available at the base village 

3. Try to keep baggage as less as possible while climbing up so that you don’t feel much pressure on your shoulders 

4. Beware of monkeys!

5. Trekking in the monsoon season is not advisable as it can be dangerous due to slippery conditions.

This trek also provides mesmerizing views of Alang-Madan-Kulang fort which is considered one of the most difficult treks in Maharashtra. If the weather is in your favor then you can get clear views of Harishchadragad and Ratangad forts which are situated nearby.  To soak in the views of beautiful landscapes, picturesque scenarios, and multiple waterfalls, one must give visit the mighty fort of Kalsubai.
